We built Fair Rent with one simple mission: Be fair. We divide rent between roommates fairly without friction, awkward negotiations, or resentment.
The Problem with "Just Splitting Evenly"
When two or three people move into an apartment, it is rare for every bedroom to be identical. One person gets the spacious master suite with an en-suite private bath and a walk-in closet, while another gets a smaller room with a shared hallway bath.
Splitting a $3,200 lease evenly at $1,600 each is simple, but it leaves the person in the smaller bedroom feeling shortchanged and overpaying for space they don't enjoy.
Our Philosophy: Transparent Mathematical Fairness
Common Space Baseline
Kitchens, living rooms, and hallways are shared equally. We reserve a 20% common utility baseline so large rooms aren't unfairly over-penalized.
Amenity Premiums
Private bathrooms, parking spots, private balconies, and closets are scored according to adjustable importance weights agreed upon by your household.
Zero Rounding Loss
Using the Hare-Niemeyer integer cents algorithm, every single penny is balanced. The sum of all roommates' rent matches the lease to $0.00.
